Betel Nut Babies - A Creative Recap
As the 21st Taipei Toy Festival 2024 (TTF) kicks off this weekend from 10/10 to 10/13, we're gearing up for the excitement of this annual celebration of creativity and innovation in the world of designer toys. To get you ready for this iconic event, we’re revisiting one of last year’s highlights: the collaboration between Taiwanese toy brand Infinity Toy (IG: infinity_toy) and designer KAI—the Betel Nut Babies series. This partnership is a great example of how designers are constantly drawing inspiration from everyday life and turning local culture into eye-catching art toys.
Betel Nut Beauties
The inspiration behind the Betel Nut Babies lies in a unique piece of Taiwanese street culture: the betel nut stands. Often found in neon-lit booths along roadsides and industrial areas. What sets these stands apart is their distinctive sales strategy, often involving "betel nut beauties," who prepare the nuts while dressed provocatively to attract more customers. This blending of street culture with creative marketing became an iconic part of Taiwan's urban landscape, showing how something as simple as a roadside stand can become a significant cultural symbol. It’s precisely this kind of everyday charm that art toy designers like KAI capture so well, transforming ordinary scenes into collectible pieces of art.
From Tradition to Toy
Expanding on that local flavor, designer KAI’s "Betel Nut Babies" (檳榔寶寶) series brings this cultural icon into the world of art toys, showing us how something as rooted in tradition as a betel nut stand can inspire playful and imaginative designs. KAI creates lifelike representations of distinct "flavors" of the betel nut, such as Twin Stars, Ching Tsai, and Bao Ye, in collaboration with Infinity Toy.

Countdown to TTF 2024
Now, with the Taipei Toy Festival 台北國際玩具創作大展 just hours away, we can't wait to see what new creative art toys will make their debut. As one of the world's most exciting designer toy exhibitions, every year TTF gathers talented artists and designers from across the globe to share their craft with fans and collectors.
Just like our message on the front page says, "This is NOT Just a Toy. This is Collectible Art." It's all about the stories, the culture, and the imagination that these artists put into their creations—where artistry and imagination truly come to life. We’ll be capturing all the action and highlights straight from the event, so stay tuned! And if you're attending, don’t miss out on the chance to visit Infinity Toy at Booth A65.
